Into the Light

I’ve fussed over this long enough. It’s time to get out in the world before I chicken out again. Fear is a powerful thing. A paralyzing thing. The fear of doing it wrong; whatever it is.

Time to overcome it and step into the light. Easy to say, harder to do.

For me, it starts with this blog. Specifically, what I want this blog to be. I could spend endless days writing about myself, how great I am, how great my stories are, but that’s not uncommon. What good does that do you? Unless you’re just obsessed with me, of course, and then, well, more power to you.

I want this blog to be about us, you and me. You, the reader, the fellow writer, and even the lurker. I want us to go on a journey together. Get to know each other. I want to share ideas, talk about the writing process, or simply discuss a great book we just read.

Why now? Because it’s time, that’s why.

My name is David Odle. I’m a writer. Like most of us, writing is not my “day job”, but it is my passion. I make my living selling contracts for an IT consulting firm and honestly, I haven’t done too bad. I’ve always described myself as an IT consultant who does some writing. But I’ve had that backward – the reality is, I’m a writer who does some IT consulting. The difference may sound subtle, maybe even trivial, but I assure you, it’s what turns night into day – the difference between smoke and fire.

I’ve got a book coming out in July of this year (July 25th, to be exact), titled Markus. I’m both excited and nervous as hell. On one hand, I’m getting published! Yay! On the other hand, what if no one buys the damn thing? There I’d be, like almost every other writer out there; making no money, never invited onto the Today Show, never recognized in airports or restaurants. But is that what really worries me?

No, of course it isn’t.

It’s deeper than money or fame. Honestly, I don’t care who buys it. The question I ask myself as I lie awake at night is… what if no one likes it?

Isn’t that the great fear we all have? Not knowing if we’re good writers or bad writers?

If you’re anything like me, you’ve got evidence to support both.

This blog covers many things. One of them being exactly that – are we any good at what we do? We’ll discuss the craft. We’ll discuss current works in progress. We’ll discuss a lot of stuff. Stuff separated by categories. Here are the primary categories I’ll try to stick to:

  • Writing – The challenges, the victories, and the process of creation through words. The journey. We’ll share stories, routines, and how we work through frustrations. YOU are not alone.

  • Upcoming Releases – I’ll provide news, snippets, and do my best to build excitement for anything I have scheduled for publication.

  • Novel X – Maybe my favorite of the categories, this topic is dedicated to my work in progress. Never titled until it’s done, it is only, Novel X. You witness a novel unfold as it is created, and you can participate!

  • Books - One thing I bet we all have in common: the love of reading. I’m always seeking recommendations on a good book and always eager to discuss what I’ve read. Let’s chat about books!

Let’s start this journey, shall we. I’m ready. I’ve been ready for a long time. My trepidation is still alive, but it’s different now. It no longer dictates my actions and paralyzes me. It can’t.

Because I have you, reader.

I’m taking your hand for courage. If you’re with me, I’m not afraid of falling. It wouldn’t be the first time.

Over time, I hope you get to know me. I want to know you. Who knows what adventures we’ll experience together. I’ll try to make them wonderful. I’ll do my best to create people and places that become part of you.

It’s time to open the door.

Don’t let go.

I’m taking my first step… into the light.
